What Is ADA Compliance & Why Should I Care?

Are you curious what ADA Compliance is and how it affects your website?

Do you believe that people with disabilities deserve to enjoy functional access to your website?

Do you want to increase your website visitors by millions?

You can do all of the above at once with one simple service. Here’s the breakdown:

What is ADA?

In September 2010, the Department of Justice (DOJ) published the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Standards for Accessible Design. These standards state that all electronic and information technology must be accessible to people with disabilities.

Essentially, what this means is that websites must be accessible for people who are blind, color blind, deaf, or suffer from diseases like epilepsy or Parkinson’s.

(So, this law essentially wants you to create a digital “wheelchair ramp” on your website so that people with disabilities can “get in” and use your website!)

To become compliant, websites needed to adapt to accommodate people with disabilities. While there were many previous solutions on the market that offered ADA Compliance, they proved to be costly and/or ineffective.

Examples of ADA Compliance Previous (Limited) Solutions:

1. Website Redesign

Some website owners have opted for either complete redesigns or rebuilds. This costly solution offers functional access, but it also limits overall website design and functionality. How so? It necessitates basic color schemes, uniform design, and static images (no video or gifs).

2. Apps

While there are a few applications on the market that claim they work to create functionality, the reality is that functionality is often very limited. For example, there are text apps that will read the web text aloud to blind users; however, the app doesn’t allow for navigation, start/stop, or the ability to order/purchase from and interact with a website. These apps are typically expensive despite their ineffectiveness.

3. Agencies

Some agencies will offer the ineffective apps in a  “software as a service” contract, meaning you’re locked into a contract. This contract states that you pay an extra fee for someone else to run an app that doesn’t work on your website. (Does that make sense to you? Yeah it doesn’t make sense to us either.)

For a long time, these solutions were the only options for websites looking to become ADA Compliant...
